Furniture has been my bread and butter since the fifties. Here in Mayfair, people don’t buy just to sit. Young men with new flats, and they all want character. A funky accent chair, gives them that. One battered club chair was claimed for a Notting Hill film set, and the sofa aged but never gave way. That’s the point with retro arm chair. They waste time with flat-pack, but they find themselves in Mayfair again. Fabric frays fast, whereas vintage lasts.
Taste splits by borough. Chelsea wants polish, with deep seats. Hackney raw, with upcycled seats. That’s London. I’ll tell you something else, accent chairs outlive their buyers. Mass production never delivers it. I still knock on the wood for weight, and I know straight away. Retro has power. If you’re thinking quick buy, think again. Bring home something with story, and see how it shapes your home.
